Rest, Recovery, & the COVID Crisis

If we stop to reflect on lessons the world is teaching us during this COVID-19 crisis, you might recognize the significance of resting and recharging... and the power in what you can accomplish from a “pause.”


Giving your all 24/7 is admirable and passionate, but is it realistic or healthy? Let's discuss.

I’m all for doing and achieving-- that’s how we have impact-- but building and sustainability are crucial to growth as well. Something to keep in mind as you grow into an even better leader, is how managing your energy is just as important and effective as managing your time.

The nature of an organic system is that we expend energy and we must recover energy. As an effective leader, you must decide what are the things that expend energy for you? And what recovers energy for you? If you are expending energy, you must have recovery practices.


Different types of recovery can include daily or periodic. Daily rest works to rest and recover from each day’s work. Periodic rest can work similarly on a larger scale keep your mind fresh by disconnecting every once in a while. It doesn’t have to be a typical vacation where you plan, travel, sightsee, etc… just a healthy break. You’d be impressed by how much more efficiently you can work when you are working, if you give your mind some time to refresh and recharge.

You may find yourself being forced into some type of rest right now due to the current state of the world— whether your work has slowed down or you are just in quarantine. Rest time is more productive to your life than you may think. Utilize this time to rejuvenate your mind. Learn something new, connect with family and friends, try new (at-home) hobbies, or maybe even just stretch. This “global pause” may seem frustrating on a multitude of levels for those of you who find yourself on a continuous work cycle.


Change your way of thinking about this and use this to center yourself, understand your purpose, learn something new, and give yourself a break. An open and well-rested mind will be the most advantageous as you continue to embark on the leadership journey.
